A Gathering of Tiny Scraps

Block Party:

This one-of-a-kind butcher block cutting board, measuring 24" x 21" x 2", was crafted as a showcase piece for a couple who wanted something truly unique for their home. Built from a variety of scrap walnut pieces, each section was hand-selected and meticulously assembled to form a striking, organic pattern that highlights the natural beauty of the wood. The approach was an artistic one, transforming offcuts into a statement piece that blends function with craftsmanship.

To enhance its practicality, we incorporated a routed edge around the board to capture excess juices and prevent any runoff. No colors or dyes were used—only a polyurethane finish, which enhances the rich, natural tones of the walnut, ensuring the board remains both durable and visually stunning. The result is a functional work of art, designed to be both a cutting surface and a conversation-worthy centerpiece in their home.

Materials used: Solid Walnut wood with a variety of sizes in width, length, and thickness.

Finish:
Polyurethane finish. (natural)

Process to Product

A woodworking workbench displays a partially assembled wooden tabletop with a geometric pattern of small wooden squares. Nearby, a work desk contains instruction papers and small tools.

We start by carefully cutting each scrap piece of walnut into blocks, which we then arrange, sort, and glue together.

Once all the pieces were glued and assembled, the next step was to ensure both sides of the cutting board were perfectly flat. To achieve this, we used technology to our advantage—a properly utilized CNC machine can work wonders

The last and final step is to apply the protective finish. This will ensure the longevity of the board. We applied a clear polyurethane finish to protect the wood, but not deter away from its natural colors.
